Next Saturday, 6th of February 2016, an Atlético Madrid hurting in their pride will measure forces with the always unpredictable SD Eibar at Vicente Calderón for Round 23 of the Spanish Liga BBVA.

Last week was extremely complicated for Atlético Madrid. After being eliminated from the Copa del Rey by a mighty Celta de Vigo at Vicente Calderón, the Colchoneros allowed Barcelona to run free at the top of the table as they’ve failed to cause them a major upset during their visit to Camp Nou last Saturday. Diego Simeone’s men started the match off on the right foot with versatile Spanish midfielder Koke opening the score on minute 10’. Atlético controlled the first twenty minutes of the match, but after that Barcelona piled on the pressure up front and ended up obtaining the equalizer on minute 30’, after a splendid attacking movement that Leo Messi sent back into Oblak’s net. Barça wanted more and just a few minutes later they got the lead by the usual suspect Luis Suárez.

As if things weren’t already hard for Atlético, they went from bad to worse after Filipe Luis and Godín were sent off in just 20 minutes’ time.

Diego Simeone will need to pull rank for next weekend’s complicated fixture against SD Eibar, as he will need to work on the players’ motivation levels in order to take the best out of them. Godín, Filipe Luis and Juanfran are all currently suspended and they will miss out there. The newcomer Augusto Fernández suffered a serious knee injury at Camp Nou last weekend and he will be absent for quite some time.

As for SD Eibar, the Basque team also didn’t have the best of weekends after losing to Málaga at Ipurua by 2-1. It was SD Eibar’s second consecutive league defeat and their seventh so far this season, on a match during which the Armeros never managed to react to Juanpi’s goal in the dying minutes of the first-half. After the break, José Luis Mendilibar’s men went for the equalizer, but they failed to cause any major upsets to Málaga’s Cameroonian goalkeeper, Kameni.

For next weekend’s complicated visit to Vicente Calderón, José Luis Mendilibar will not be able to rely on Ander Reina and on Ivan Ramis, who are both sidelined due to injury.
